Community
The residents of Dismas House are committed to giving back to the community. Part of the program at the Almost Home program is a commitment of community service. Dismas House takes its responsibility as a corporate citizen of Worcester and West Bolyston seriously as well. The reconciliation of former prisoners and the community does not only happen within four walls, and that’s why we work hard to be good neighbors. If you have a community service project and need our help, please contact us at (508) 799-9389.
How we give back:
Almost Home residents train assistance dogs for area disabled persons. Seven dogs have been placed with an Iraqi war veteran, disabled children, and a special needs classroom.
Dismas founded the Richards Street garden in 1998, purchasing the lots to preserve them for neighborhood kids. Dismas is building a solar-powered greenhouse on the lots in 2007-2008.
Dismas/Almost Home residents clean up neighborhoods, picking up trash, and cleaning up parks, such as Banis Park on Grafton Hill, and community gardens on Grafton Hill.
Almost Home residents volunteer once a week at Many Hands Organic Farm in Barre
Almost Home residents volunteer for the Blackstone Canal Fest.
Father John Brooks House staff volunteer for Providence Street crime watch and are members of the Grafton Hill Business Association
